The Queen's image on coins....

Why is the Queen depicted on current Aussie and Canadian coins?

I mean, I'm not a moron about history (well, maybe I am) but that's just it...it's history.

 I guess what I'm trying to say it, don't these countries have anyone else they deem worthy enough to depict on a coin?

That is their queen. Australia and Canada have dominion status as part of the United Kingdom.

It's that simple? I mean we put lots of different folks on our coins. Do you feel that the Queen of England is really that popular with Australians and Canadians?

Not really sure if she is popular with Canadians or Aussies, you could try and ask some of them. However, she is their queen. Presumably, once she leaves the throne (by death or abdication) the new monarch will be depicted in their money. It's not much of an issue of popularity, though. How many Americans really love Andrew Jackson or know details of his presidency? Yet, he's on the $20.

Thank you for your answers. Kinda new to foreign coinage. Do they ever not put the Queen on coins? I really just have lunar series (on the way from APMEX) and a few Maples....

I think that she's on all the regular issued currency.

I know there are alot of countries in the British Commonwealth, but have thier own government. Not sure what Commonwealth staus means. Think alot is economic ties and common defense.

I've seen quite a few types of currency with the queen on it from many different nations. Not sure how many countries in the Commonwealth. I'd guess at least ten, but alot are islands.

Officially it's known as the Commonwealth of Nations; "British" got dropped because it offended the sensibilities of the ex-colonies. There are economic ties between the Commonwealth members, but there is no common defense structure. The one uniting element of the Commonwealth is the fact that the Queen is the head of it, though she's not the head of state of each country in the Commonwealth.

Many members of the Commonwealth do still have the Queen as their head of state, which is why she appears (unfortunately) on their coinage. That includes Canada, Australia, NZ, plus a bunch of Caribbean island states (Grenada, etc.).

imo, The current monarchs image (Queen Elizabeth 2nd), is left on the Canadian coinage as a sign of respect of the monarchy. But if you were to check the paper money notes, you'd notice images of past Prime Ministers of Canada on those instead of the Queen.
ie: Wilfred Laurier, Lester B Pearson, etc.

Plus, it's still called the "Royal Canadian Mint" after all. So it would be a bit of a slam if her image was removed from all the money entirely, yes?

I would assume as long as there are institutions with designations like...

The Royal Canadian Mint,
The Royal Conservatory of Music,
The Royal Bank of Canada,

that we are going to have some (even if only symbolic in nature) ties to the Royal throne.

- She's a class act
- The face of Price Charles wouldn't fit
- I suggested an image of my cat, but the idea didn't catch on.

I think most Canadians don't give two craps about the queen. Her image on the coins (and pretty much everything having to do with her here) is basically a matter of tradition. I believe new immigrants still have to swear loyalty to the queen.

It's all ceremonial, like being nice to your step-dad even after your mom dies.

Her Britannic Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second, is on Canadian Coins and the Twenty Dollar bill because she is the Head of State. The Prime Minister is the head of Government. The Kinks song "Victoria" said it best:
Long ago life was clean
Sex was bad and obscene
And the rich were so mean
Stately homes for the lords
Croquet lawns, village greens
Victoria was my queen
Victoria, victoria, victoria, toria

I was born, lucky me
In a land that I love
Though I am poor, I am free
When I grow I shall fight
For this land I shall die
Let her sun never set
Victoria, victoria, victoria, toria
Victoria, victoria, victoria, toria

Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Victoria, toria
Victoria, victoria, Victoria, toria

Canada to India
Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the west to the east
From the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all
Victoria, victoria, victoria, toria
Victoria, victoria, victoria:rock:
